CREATE YOUR OPTIMAL WRITING PLACE
Writing is a personal journey. You must create or find a writing place that fits your creative and academic needs. Take into consideration where you seem to do your best writing. Is it at the kitchen table? Is it in your bedroom, home office, or outside on your back porch? Once you have determined this location, think about what you must have in this environment to make it optimal for writing. The following questions will help you to determine what type of writing environment you prefer:
Do you require bright lighting or dim lighting?
Try lamps with adjustable lighting. On a sunny day, sit next to a window.
Do you require a hard table and straight-back chair, or do you prefer the sofa or a bean bag chair?
Don’t forget about lumbar support. A writing session can sometimes be lengthy.
Do you write best when the temperature is cool or warm?
You can try a small fan or small electrical heater. You can also dress in layers.
Do you need complete silence or prefer background sounds?
If there’s no access to a quiet place, try noise-cancelling earphones.
Answering the above questions will guide you in creating an environment that promotes the level of concentration you need to do your best writing.
So, get ready, set, and write!
Yours in writing,
Dr. Cager
